Russell-watch: Day 40.

Captain’s Log. Star-date, September 4th 2007. We’ve been in “contract limbo” for 40 days now. We’ve been running low on food, and probably a little low on patience. We’ve been splitting time between Atlanta and our hometown of Mobile, Alabama. We’ve been working out with our high school football team, trying to stay in shape. We want to be in the NFL. We just seem to be having some contract issues.

The Russell hold-out has reached 40 days. While it seems virtually impossible that he’ll play any live snaps for the Raiders this year, there at least seems to be some clarity into the reasoning behind the hold out. While yes, it is over money, as previously discussed, it is more specifically about the lack of a skill and injury clause in Russell’s contract. Russell’s agents want more money, specifically more guaranteed money, if the Raiders are unwilling to put the skill and injury clause in Russell’s contract. The Raiders, on the other hand, have previously argued that they’ve met Russell’s requirements regarding the skill and injury clause and that Russell’s agents are asking for too much in guaranteed money. So what’s really going on? The Sacramento Bee is reporting that, while the Raiders have seemingly agreed to the skill and injury clause in Russell’s contract, they also want the ability to recoup their money if Russell held-out, or was physically unable to play football for any reason (i.e. being incarcerated). Russell’s agents believe this sort of “half-truth” by the Raiders does not adequately protect Russell’s interests, and they are therefore asking for more guaranteed money (some are saying upwards of $35 million guaranteed, if the skill and injury clause isn’t in the contract), which the Raiders are seemingly unwilling to give. So…who’s right and who’s wrong? that’s for you, the reader to decide. I will say this about the situation though. I think a lot of the Raiders concerns have been heightened because of the Michael Vick situation, and the Falcons attempt to recoup bonus money from him. Secondly, I am a little miffed at the mainstream media outlets coverage of the Russell hold-out. The number 1 pick in the NFL draft has held out for 40 days and it seems like the only people covering it are the local California papers. Where are the CNN/SI’s? the ESPN’s? the Yahoo!Sports’? I’m just wondering aloud…

Yahoo! Sports: Union to challenge Falcons over Vick’s money

LA Times: Russell, Raiders stay at odds

The Modesto Bee: Talk cheap, Russell not, for Raiders

The Sacramento Bee: Agents for Russell meet with Raiders negotiators

  2. I wonder if Jamarcus Russell does not want to play in Oakland? Perhaps he feels if he holds out.. Oakland will get tired of it.. and he can go elsewhere? Maybe he wants to go play in Atlanta??

  3. Some of the things I’ve heard said that he told Oakland not to draft him if they weren’t going to put this skill & injury clause into his contract…based on what’s happening right now, i think that he is definitely willing to move on

  4. Perhaps Oakland should have listened.. Hey there are plenty of teams out there that would be willing to give him what he wants.. He has a ton of upside!

  5. The Raiders got the #1 pick because they had an offense that was Pop Warner all the way. The league gives them the 1st pick so they can improve. Nobody wants slugs in the league. And what to the Raiders do with the pick? They waste it. A rookie receiver who misses the entire preseason is not going to be an impact player this year. The Raiders new motto ” Just loose baby”.
