Sports Agents who are on their game: Scott Boras

Filed under: Agencies, Endorsements, Sports Agent — Tags: , — emmettjones @ 9:06 pm

Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka signed an exclusive memorabilia and autograph deal with trading card company, Upper Deck. Upper Deck will be hawking Dice-K autographs and game-used cards. So, the question everyone is asking is, “how much will that Dice-K autograph cost?” The answer? $450.00. Yes, you read that right. Or, if you want his signature with a kanji inscription to accompany it? That’s an extra $100.00. For those who think $550.00 dollars for a Dice-K autograph may be a dollar or two (hundred) too much, you can also find the autographs in random packs of Upper Deck’s Goudey baseball and SP Rookie Edition Baseball (released August 23rd and September 6th, respectively). For those wondering, Dice-K currently is 13-10 with an ERA of 3.76.

Really have to hand it to Scott Boras here. As Darren Rovell points out in his article, “Dice-K mania” was unquestionably high in April, but we’re in August now and Dice-K has had a pretty average season. Boras though, still managed to pull off a deal that earns Dice-K nearly $150 per autograph, one of the highest payouts in sports memorabilia history. Of course what else could you expect from the man who pulled off the greatest deal in sports history?

Super agent Scott Boras has his own company, the Scott Boras Corporation. The website is found here. You can’t do anything with it unless you already have a username/password, but you can click the “contact us” link, to send them an email.
