The Philadelphia Eagles never cease to amaze.

The Philadelphia Eagles released pro bowl linebacker Jeremiah Trotter today, in a move that I assume surprised a lot of people, especially myself. Trotter, who is 30, was a fan favorite in Philly, and was still pretty productive last season (113 tackles). This leaves the middle linebacker spot open for the newly acquired Takeo Spikes and allow younger players, like Omar Gaither, to get more playing time. This is the second time the Eagles released Trotter, who was released in 2002, before playing two years with the Redskins and being re-signed by the Eagles in 2004. Although the Eagles suggested that Trotter retire (a little mean spirited, yes?) Trotter plans to try and sign with another team and play during the 2007 season. If it doesn’t work out maybe he can go back to playing Extreme Dodgeball with the Philadelphia Benjamins.

The last known reference that I found to an agent for Jeremiah Trotter, was Jimmy Sexton of Athletic Resource Management.

ESPN: Eagles cut LB Trotter

Update: August 24th. Trotter is working out with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  1. a bit surprising and a bit not surprising, He has been invisible in preseason and just obviously cannot run anymore. I think because of the STRONG DT situation we apparently have, it helps to have a guy in the middle who can move, they draft that awesome LB from Nebraska – Stewart Bradley and Gaither moving to be the starting at MLB and then you have spikes & gocong on the outside and the rest and we are fine. Trotter was either going to have to move outside as a back up or get cut. You know what happened next. He just can’t run, have you been watching him, Does he even have a tackle? I don’t think so. The EAGLES have always known when to get rid of: Taylor, Vincent, Hugh Douglas, Shawn Barber – Twice, Emmons, and who to keep, DL and OL and Dawkins. I feel completely comfortable with this move as he didn’t have the speed anymore, I say New Orleans possibly and also maybe no team.
